March 14, 2008 (Computerworld) QLogic Corp. this week announced the availability of its 8Gbit/sec. Fibre Channel switch and its companion 8Gbit/sec. host bus adapter (HBA). QLogic's announcement followed one by Emulex Corp. last week, which released its LightPulse LPe12000 family of 8Gbit/sec. HBAs.

Both vendors' products offer twice the performance of today's 4Gbit/sec. Fibre Channel technology, providing greater I/O scalability in support of an increase in the number of applications running on virtualized servers.

The companies are touting the new products' ability to consolidate applications onto fewer physical servers and thereby increasing the benefits of server virtualization, such as reduced procurement and management costs, as well as lower power and cooling costs. more...

Gbps FC SAN delivers blazing speed

Double-speed Fibre Channel SAN kits include software, HBAs, switches, and disk arrays at 4Gbps prices.

By Jack Fegreus

At most small to medium-sized business (SMB) sites, Fibre Channel-based SANs have long been viewed as complex and costly solutions that could be avoided by using direct-attached storage (DAS). That perspective has been reinforced by the ease-of-use of Microsoft Windows Server, which has left many SMB sites operating with a minimal IT staff. Worse yet, those same SMBs are highly risk averse when it comes to anything that appears to be a disruptive upgrade. more...

8 Gb FC, Qlogic, HP, And VM I/O

I've spent the better part of the last week reconfiguring gear in the virtualization test lab, getting reacquainted with machine specs and idiosyncrasies. We have a variety of servers connected to a Dell (Dell), nee EqualLogic, iSCSI SAN. Half of our HP (NYSE: HPQ) servers and one Xserve also have 2 Gb Fibre Channel HBAs, unused since we lost our FC SAN. Remember when those 2 Gb FC connections seemed zippy? 4 Gb HBAs have been on the market for a couple years, and a number of recent 8 Gb FC solutions are being touted as a remedy for I/O constraints in virtualized environments. more...

Fibre Channel over Ethernet takes its next step

By Dave Raffo, News Director
17 Oct 2007 | SearchStorage.comGRAPEVINE, Texas -- Storage infrastructure vendors are pushing the nascent Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) standard as the quickest path to 10 Gbps Ethernet connectivity, although iSCSI proponents obviously disagree.

QLogic Corp. kicked off the latest round of FCoE hype yesterday with a press conference at Storage Networking World (SNW) to launch its new 8 Gbps switches and host bus adapters (HBA) and to pledge support for the new FCoE standard. At SNW, QLogic, Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) and Nuova Systems Inc. ran a demonstration system using QLogic FCoE adapters, NetApp storage and Nuova technology. more...

DALLAS -- Storage Networking World -- Vendors are cranking up their Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCOE) strategies here this week, with QLogic, NetApp, Nuova Systems (a startup of which Cisco owns 80 percent), Emulex, and Brocade all pushing technology they claim will unify data center networks.

Tuesday, for example, QLogic teamed up with NetApp and software specialist Nuova Systems to demo a converged network adapter (CNA), which runs Fibre Channel over Ethernet. more...

IT managers consider FCOE to cut through their cabling problems

By James Rogers, October 17, 2007, 6:15 PM

DALLAS -- Storage Networking World -- Although still in its infancy, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCOE) has already started to grab the attention of users keen to boost the performance of their existing data center kit and make sense of their cabling nightmares.

"This is something that I have got to have," said keynote speaker Steve Fastook, vice president of technical and commercial operations at Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based CNBC during his talk here today. The exec explained that CNBC would like to boost the performance of storage without ripping and replacing huge chunks of its existing infrastructure. more...

CNBC hopes to fly Fibre Channel on its Ethernet superhighway

October 17, 2007 (Computerworld) -- DALLAS -- Steve Fastook, vice president of technical and commercial operations at CNBC Inc., could soon have his proverbial back up against a wall as his raised floor has reached its cabling limit. So he's hoping a new technology will allow him to utilize his existing LAN to serve up high-definition video from several large Fibre Channel SANs to more than 200 editing stations.

"Our data center is about 600 racks. Our computer floor is full between the broadcast cabling and data cabling, which is merged now. So anything I can do that leverages the cabling infrastructure is huge for us," Fastook said. "A [rip and] replace would literally be catastrophic for us." more...
